Until recently, Varroa destructor was thought to be the same species as the closely related V. jacobsoni. Both parasitize the Asian honey bee, Apis cerana. The jump to A. mellifera probably first took place in the Philippines in the early 1960s, when imported A. mellifera came into close contact with infected A. cerana.
