DEFINITION

A medical condition in children and youth in which excessive fat accumulates in the body, caused by an imbalance of energy consumption and energy expenditure. It is defined as a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for children and adolescents of the same age and sex. Childhood obesity may lead to premature death and disability in adulthood.
Condición médica en niños y jóvenes en los que el exceso de grasa se acumula en el cuerpo, causado por un desequilibrio del consumo de energía y el gasto energético. Se define como un índice de masa corporal igual o superior al percentil 95 para los niños, niñas y adolescentes de la misma edad y sexo. La obesidad infantil puede llevar a la muerte prematura y discapacidad en la edad adulta.
